Silver Chains

Silver chains are arguably the staple of any jewellery collection. Chains can be worn on their own, with pendants or even as a group. There are plenty of variations on the standard silver chain to suit virtually any requirement – ranging from beaded chains and box chains to lariat chains and chains with fixed pendants. There are a number of things to consider when buying your silver chain. Arguably, the most important of these is the length of chain that the wearer will require. Most designers work to standard lengths, with 16 and 18 inch (that’s about 40 to 45 centimetres) being the most common sizes. A good way to work out the right length is to measure another necklace that the person in question wears frequently. If the silver chain you’re considering is shorter than you’d ideally like, always ask the jeweller if it is possible to have it extended – many chain styles can be made longer with ease.

Other things to consider when choosing a silver chain for someone are: whether the wearer might snag it on something, or have it pulled by children; whether the chain will have a heavy pendant attached; whether the chain will be taken on and off frequently; and, whether or not the wearer will be able to do up the clasp on their own.
